If there’s one thing I’ve noticed since I started blogging, it’s the number of people who are interested in telling you why you should be blogging, how you’re doing it wrong and why you’re probably not gonna succeed in doing it. You should be monetising! But not only doing it for the money. You should be social and promotional! But not too much or else it comes off spammy. I’ve scrolled though countless posts out to tell people how they’re blogging wrong.
But it’s so often overlooked that not everyone blogs as a job. Similarly, not everyone blogs as a hobby. I honestly don’t think there is a right or wrong way to blog (okay so people who schedule tweets to spam a chat with links but don’t actually join chats wreck my head but…). There are so many reasons to blog- out of passion, for a hobby, just to have a little corner of the internet to spew your thoughts and get social, or to turn it into a career.
By the time this post goes live my blog will have just turned 2 months old. I started this as a hobby, I guess. A reason to be productive between jobs after walking out of my last one, and as something to focus on while battling my way through a low hour contract job that I was convinced would drive me mad. I was wrong about that. But blogging has turned into something much more for me.
I’m not just spewing my thoughts into the void of the internet – because by some miracle I’ve made friends and have readers through doing it. Knowing that people have an interest in what you have to say beyond just tweeting about that time your dad floored himself trying to uproot a shrub is a feeling you absolutely cannot beat. My dad nearly knocking himself out with a plant was hilarious though.
Where am I taking it? Well, I’m not entirely sure. I’d love to start working with brands and get to enjoy that side of blogging too, but my massive inferiority complex is still a little too strong for that. In the meantime I do have some very exciting things planned and I hope they’ll soon include more bloggers brunches, more pancakes, and maybe a sneaky brand partnership or two.
So why do you blog? What do you love about it?
